As Hong Kong’s population ages, the Silver Economy represents not just a market opportunity but a chance to build stronger, more inclusive communities. With 1.45 million residents aged 65+ (19.6% of our population) and 590,000 living in private homes, many see elder care as a looming challenge.
Yet, two pioneering organisations — Caregiver’s Allies and Grand Ma Limited — are showing that intergenerational collaboration can transform caregiving and reconnect youth and elders in meaningful ways.
Why does intergenerational connection matter?
- Shared Wisdom: Seniors hold decades of life experience — insights on relationships, resilience, and well-being — that can guide younger generations.
- Mutual Support: When middle-aged or older caregivers become peer coaches, they lighten the burden on families and foster a supportive network.
- Social Cohesion: Experiential programs that bring youth and elders together break down stereotypes, reduce isolation, and strengthen community bonds.
Rather than seeing elders as a burden, intergenerational collaboration lets younger people tap into decades of wisdom while giving seniors purpose and community. This mutual support strengthens families and builds a more inclusive, age-friendly city.
🛡️ Caregiver’s Allies 顧友樂行
Who are they?
Caregiver’s Allies is a cross-sector NGO empowering unpaid caregivers — individuals who look after elderly relatives, friends with disabilities or mental health needs, or children requiring special care.
In Hong Kong, many caregivers themselves are middle-aged or senior adults, yet services traditionally focus on care recipients, not carers.
What do they do?
By training experienced caregivers to become peer coaches, Caregiver’s Allies transforms lived experience into leadership:
- Mindset Transformation – Shifting from duty to empowered choice
- Self-Care Practice – Building daily habits that sustain well-being
- Psychological Resilience – Thriving in the face of stress
- Emotion Management – Navigating complex feelings
- Social Connection – Cultivating a network of mutual support
Why is their work important?
In Hong Kong, numerous NGOs and social enterprises focus on the welfare of patients or older adults — but far fewer address the needs of caregivers themselves. This gap exists because our society has long lacked the language and framework to recognize “caregivers” as a distinct group with unique challenges. As a result:
- Invisible Burden: Caregivers often put others first, neglecting their own physical and mental health until crisis strikes.
- Rising Stress & Isolation: Without targeted support, many develop anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal, feeling they must face caregiving alone.
- Risk of Burnout: Continuous, unpaid care for relatives with chronic conditions or special needs can push even the most resilient individuals toward despair.
Caregiver’s Allies fills this critical void by empowering caregivers through peer coaching, practical skills training, and a supportive community. They ensure that those who give so much are seen, heard, and sustained — creating a healthier ecosystem for families and society.

👵 Grand Ma Limited 「臨敢珍」
Who are they?
Grand Ma Limited reimagines the role of seniors in society by crafting intergenerational experiences that celebrate elder stories and forge genuine connections between young and old.
What are some of the immersive experiences they offer?
- Tea & Tales: Casual storytelling over tea aboard the Star Ferry, where elders share memories and youth practice attentive listening.
- Family Recipe Film Series: Seniors share treasured recipes while teens handle filming and editing — preserving culinary heritage and sparking dialogue.
- Dreams Come True: Seniors pursue bucket-list dreams (e.g. wearing a wedding dress taking photos) with youth serving as their supporters.
These hands-on activities build empathy, break down age-based stereotypes, and infuse seniors with a renewed sense of purpose.
From Challenge to Collective Strength
By empowering caregivers to coach one another and by creating spaces where elders and youth learn side by side, Caregiver’s Allies and Grand Ma Limited are demonstrating that active aging is a catalyst for community resilience. Rather than viewing our elders as a burden, we can tap into their wisdom and life stories to foster empathy, intergenerational solidarity, and sustainable social innovation.
